Disney Junior Dance Party came to DC over the week end, and I just knew Sebastian was going to embarrass me. His dad works for Live Nation, so premium seats were the bait. His dad never understands why I dread coming out to events. But Sebastian is at that terrible toddler stage where he completely chooses to ignore commands, he cannot sit still, he’s still scared of everything, and, if I turn my back for one second, I am liable to find him swinging from any number of rafters. My legs literally start shaking because every time I think I am going to sit down, they get caught in an awkward squat position before I have to will them back up to chase this boy down like the creepy T-1000 in Terminator. Like, how did he even get there so fast. So yeah, public places with Sebastian sway on the side of panic attacks. The thought of even being at public events triggers PTSD, but I took the bait. Who am I to deny my boy experiences.
After watching 3 Presidential helicopters swoop into the White House, I had solved the traffic riddle. In my head, I thought this is probably a bad omen. But we arrived, and I got nervous. After making our rounds to see the Constitution Hall folks, we approached our seats. The show was in full swing at this point. Walking down the aisle, it was like a curtain lifting – Sebastian’s face shifted from flirtatious (he greeted all the ushers with a spacious smile and high five) to distrusting terror. Mickey and Goofy looked too live. Too Big. Too REAL.
I waited for the blood curdling screams. I have this mean run out I do at venues when Sebastian does not act right. I braced, I got set, but the cry never came. So, we sat. Our seats were perfectly positioned between the stage, the aisle, and a mosh pit of kids. He felt out the scenery from my lap and eventually eased his way down. OMG!
My baby started dancing. His daddy got him one of the epileptic circus toys, and his little life was literally complete. I’m not sure what kind of moves he was doing, but he hopped, skipped, jumped, and bopped his curly head while waving his toy at all his favorite Disney Junior characters. I underestimated him. I still know his antics, but I am so glad I gave him the chance to prove me wrong. If you have the chance to see the show, do not hesitate. It wasn’t super long, the performers were engaging, and it encourages kids to get up and move around.
